Q: What age can my child start judo?
A: Kids can start as young as 5 years old.
Q: Do kids need prior martial arts experience?
A: No experience is needed! We teach all fundamentals, including safe falling, throws, and basic self-defense skills.
Q: How are classes structured?
A: Classes combine fun games, skill drills, partner practice, and supervised randori. Every class is designed to keep kids engaged while learning proper technique. Our classes are multi-age and mixed skill but we further break down into smaller groups by age and skill level.
Q: How often are belt promotions?
A: Belt promotions are held regularly, depending on your child’s progress. Our coaches will announce when belt promotions are coming up, testing requirements, and which judokas are being considered for a belt promotion.
Q: Is judo safe for kids?
A: Absolutely! Our instructors teach safe falling techniques from the very first class and closely supervise all practice. Safety is always our top priority.
Q: What if my child gets hurt?
A: Our instructors are certified in first aid and CPR. Minor scrapes and bumps are handled immediately, and parents are notified if anything serious occurs.
Q: Do kids need medical clearance?
A: A basic health check is recommended. If your child has specific medical concerns, please consult your physician before starting.
Q: What should my child wear to their first class?
A: For the first class and free one-week trial, wear comfortable long-sleeve and long-pant athletic clothes. After that, students wear a judo uniform (gi).
Q: Do kids need special shoes or gear?
A: No shoes are worn on the mat but all students should leave their shoes at the edge of the mat and should never walk off the mat barefoot. This ensures all students' safety while off the mat, as well as mat cleanliness. All students should bring a water bottle.
Q: Can children wear glasses or braces safely?
A: Glasses are not permitted for the safety of all participants. If children have braces, we recommend you purchase and use a mouthguard.
Q: How quickly do children progress?
A: Progress depends on age, attendance, and effort.
Q: Is judo focused on self-defense or competition?
A: Both! Kids learn safe self-defense skills while also having opportunities to compete in tournaments if they choose.
Q: How long is each class?
A: Our classes are 90 minutes long.
Q: Is there a parent observation area?
A: Yes, parents are encouraged and welcome to stay and watch classes.

Q: Do you offer make-up classes for absences or for bad-weather cancellations?
A: Your tuition covers unlimited classes for the month, if we have to cancel for bad weather or you have to miss a class, just join us for the next class!
Q: Are gis included?
A: Gis are not included but you can purchase a gi through us. You can also bring your own gi.
Q: Is there a free trial class?
A: Yes! We encourage every new student to try our free one-week trial to get the full experience.
Q: How do instructors handle discipline?
A: Our instructors use positive reinforcement and structured guidance to maintain a respectful and safe environment.
Q: Are bullying or conflicts addressed?
A: Yes, we teach respect, teamwork, and conflict resolution. Any issues are addressed immediately.
